The progressing of the sun on January 14th in the northward direction into Capricorn is celebrated as Uttarayan. The north direction is the direction of redemption and spiritual progress. It is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. Any donation made for this festive day is said to result in punya (fruitful merit).
