    Namaste,

I thank you for the information about the baby shower ceremony but was wondering and have been for a long time as to why the brother in law slaps the bhabhi? What is the meaning or significance behind this action?

I hope you can enlighten me further.

    Thanks.

This makes no sense I dont understand why people still do this? Blessing?? Im sorry mataji has already blessed you! your pregnant! thats the biggest blessing you have? and all the people you invite.. how many of them are actually going to be of your childs life when its here?

traditions and religion are two different things. God would rather you do something for the less fortunate than waste your time in such ceremonies that people dont understand why you do in the first place!

    Response to @Hetal from England

I get it that you dont understand religion, tradition and culture. I can give you simple example.

Yes God blessed thats why there is a pregnancy, so here it is, It is exactly like to do batter make up and fashionable cloths etc.

You are blessed with face why would you do make up.
You are blessed with body and cloths, why would you choose only fashionable cloths.
You are blessed with brain, why would you go to school and learn Math.
there are lot more like that..

Hope you understand, Looks like you are highly influence with western culture.

The significance of Khora bharvanau is that when a woman is pregnant for the first time, it gets blessings from the Family Goddess or God to have a safe delivery and may her other deliveries are safe as well.

The ceremony varies in the different castes. In Vanias ususally the sthampna of Randal Mataji is done of the day of the khoro bharvano (Shrimant.) On that day after Matajis puja, the pregnant womans washes her hair for the first time in the seventh month. She then lights a diya at the paniyara (where the family drinks water from) From there she starts her pagla. The proceedure of this is that first a coconut is given in her hand and then a green and white cloth are put in front of her. Someone from her maternal home comes and puts a coin and sopari. The pregnant woman then touches it, and that is her step. That coin and sopari is given to the would be fathers sister. This proceedure carries on until she reaches in front of the sthapna. the coconut is offered to Mataji, but she cannot sit and has to stay standing.

Two bags of shagun are already prepared. One is from the pregnant womans mothers side and the other is from the husbands side. Each of the bags should have a leaf, 1.5 kg rice and other shagun items such as 16 fruits. First the mother in law exchanges the bag from her palav to the pregnant weomans palav and the total swaps should be seven. Even the pregnant womans mother does this with the other bag.

The pregnant woman could now sit on a stool/bajoth. then her sister in law/nanad ties her a rakhadi. The mother in law makes her drink sweet milk. Then a small child is put on the lap of the pregnant woman and is fed a sweet. The smaller brother in law of the pregnant woman slaps her seven times with red kanku.

This is the ceremony in short, and may vary in castes.
