एक बार जब सरदार वल्ल भाई पटेल बहुत बीमार थे तब उनसे मिलने कई वरिष्ठ कांग्रेसी नेता उनके घर आए. लेकिन उनके घर और उनकी हालत देखकर सभी हैरान हो गए. सरदार पटेल के चश्मे की कमानी टूटी हुई थी, जिनकी जगह सरदार पटेल ने धागा बांधा हुआ था. इतना ही नहीं उनकी बेटी मणिबेन पटेल ने भी पैबंद लगे कपड़े पहने हुए थे. यह सब देखकर सभी कांग्रेसी नेता हैरान रह गए और सरदार वल्लभ भाई से पूछा देश के गृह मंत्री होने के बावजूद आप ऐसे कैसे रहते हैं?



सरदार वल्लभ भाई पटेल का जवाब सीधा था, उनका कहना था कि �मैं एक विपन्न देश, जो गरीबी और लाचारी की मार से जूझ रहा है, का गृह मंत्री हूं और अगर मैं ही यह बात नहीं समझूंगा तो यह मेरे देश के लोगों के साथ विश्वासघात होगा.� और जब यही सवाल उनकी बेटी से पूछा गया तो उनका भी यही कहना था कि �वह एक गरीब द

People of India feel proud for the leader like Sardar Ballabh Bhai Patel who could bring country in one string when many princely states and big state like Nijam and Junagarh were not in favour of joining Inaian Unio.He did great job without any bloodshed.We feel ourselves unfortunate for missing him so early.If God blessed him to live with us for another 5 to 10 year more, the charactor of governance would have different.
